As an American and as a junior Marine, I am truly honored to have had the opportunity to speak at Secretary of Defense James Mattis’s appreciation dinner before his departure as secretary.
Thank you to former Secretary of Defense (and Senator) William Cohen, Mr. Bob Tyrer and The Cohen Group for my invitation and for allowing me this privilege.
To Secretary (and General) Mattis, thank you for your service, sacrifice, lessons and the legacy are leaving the Marine Corps. I am humbled by your friendship and look forward to many years to come. Fair winds and following seas, sir, and Semper Fidelis.
It is always a tremendous honor to see former Secretary of Homeland Security, White House Chief of Staff and Marine General John Kelly (48 years of service).
But, above everything else he is a gold star father.
On November 9, 2010 General Kelly’s son, Marine First Lieutenant Robert Kelly, was killed by a land mine while leading Marines in Sangin, Afghanistan.
His other son is also a Marine Corps officer.
Thank you to you and your family, sir, for your incredible sacrifice for our grateful nation.
Another surreal moment I will always treasure with Secretary of Defense and Senator William Cohen alongside Secretary of Defense and Marine Corps General James Mattis.
